Allo everybody,
I thought you might be interested in what I brought from Mexico. Some of my friends also have asked me what things I bought in Mexico. I took some photos to show you.
“What’s in Maangchi’s bags?” Here you go! More stories about my travel will be posted later. Let me know what you think! Would you buy the same things as I did?
Frida bag
bowl
colorful bowls
coconut shell bowls
clay mugs
mortar, I bought the pestle, too, but it was confiscated at the airport in Mexico ^^
green bowl purchased in Oaxaca
mezcal : distilled alchohol made from the maguey plant
Oaxacan cheese (very chewy)
Chorizo (sausage made from pork and green vegetables and spinach)
Jewelry
colorful basket and pouch
Oh my goodness! Mezcal?! That is some very serious stuff, lol! My husband is Mexican and his father has lots of bottles of homemade mezcal in their pantry. It could strip the black off of asphalt! Lol! He has given me a tiny little bit of it before, but I couldn’t drink it :-/ My father-in-law thought it was very funny. We have a small bottle of it that a friend brought back from Mexico for us. It has a very cute picture of a cartoon worm waving at us on the label. We’ve only drunk it around Thanksgiving or Christmas time and even then only a little bit. I’m too afraid to drink more because whoever gets the last shot has to eat the tiny worm at the bottom…bleh :( Maangchi, you are my hero and never cease to amaze me!
Wow,great stuff. These colors are to die for.
Not to mention,Chorizo,Yum~
Awh.. I love going to other countries and buying things. You can always find the neatest things and bargains. Especially when you live in the US (even though I’ve actually been living in the Philippines for almost a year now as part of my travels but I’ll be going back home soon)so it’s either that you can’t find those sort of things there or they’ll sell them at expensive prices. Hope it was a lovely stay, I have never been there but maybe some day.
Yeah, I pick something cheap but very local stuff. Today I am going to work on my all beautiful photos that I took in Mexico to share with my readers. You will love it!
Wow! I love ur green bowl! Very sophisticated! I would love to put some food in it :P btw did u punched a hole in ur cheese or it comes in that way?
Wow Maangchi sounds so exciting! haha ps does anyone know how to like have a default profile picture?
Hola!I hope you liked my country, Maangchi! <3
Eggs with chorizo are delicious for breakfast, you should try it :)
Did you learn some spanish words? jeje
My family, friends and I, really like korean food, we love your recipes :DDDDD
I'm sorry if my english is wrong :(
Hola! you know these days I have habit saying “hola”instead of “hi”. lol
I miss your country Mexico a lot. I’m going to blog about the food and people soon. Your English is perfect. Who cares about English. We can talk through body language. : )
Everything that you brought home looks exciting colorful and fantastic! The food and drink probably disappeared by now. ;)
“The food and drink probably disappeared by now. ;)” no, not yet. I haven’t touched the sausage and cheese yet.
Hi Maangchi,
I am a big, big fan of yours! I’m so excited that you went to Oaxaca! (I am American but my husband is from Oaxaca. I’ve been there several times to visit his family.) Did you try chapulines (grasshoppers) or mole? What about the nieves and tlayudas? Maybe you can make your own kimchi/quesillo tlayuda! Did you try any of the sandwiches made with quesillo? They put mashed beans, pickled jalapeno, shredded quesillo and avocado on a Mexican roll (telera). I thought beans on a sandwich was kind of unusual but it was really delicious.
When I went I bought almost the same things you did except I also bought rebozos (the cotton and silk wraps) and prepared paste for making mole negro. Also, my husband’s family is from a really remote indigenous village in the highlands where they grow coffee. I usually bring back some of their coffee beans and homemade chili paste. (They smoke chilis over the fire they use to cook tortillas and grind it with salt. It’s delicious- you would probably love it!)
Ok, that’s enough… maybe I talked too much about Mexico!
I really miss Mexico now. ” my husband’s family is from a really remote indigenous village in the highlands where they grow coffee” great! I would like to visit the village someday. : ) I have so many good photos that I took in Mexico. I am going to post them soon on my blog.
I’ve really been enjoying your photos Maangchi! (Your captions are so funny.) The village is really beautiful- I’ll be your tour guide any day!
Maangchi Onni, how come your mortar and pestle got confiscated at the airport? It looks so awesome too and well made..Just curious so I can have an Idea what not to buy in case we go and travel Mexico too.Thnx!
Dear Ina, how are u!!
They only took my pestle because it could be used as weapon. : )
Hi!Onni,I’m good..thank you for sharing your photos.:-))
Let’s hope the dress finds its way back to the rightful owner. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Thank you for your good wish about the dress. But even if the dress didn’t come back to me, I wouldn’t be disappointed. The dress fulfilled its mission well. I wore the dress only once for my video. You will see the dress in one of my upcoming videos.
I like the coconut shell bowls, the other bowls are very bright and colorful , very FIESTA ! Lol ..
Seems like you’re having so much fun over there . You didn’t buy any Tequila with the worm in the bottom of the bottle ? LOL
” Tequila with the worm in the bottom of the bottle ” haha!
I had never heard about the worm before going to Mexico. I saw a worm in the bottom of the mezcal bottle. The mezcal seller said it’s cheaper than the one that I bought which has no worm. The mezcal with worm is 1 or 2 years old and the one I bought is 10 years old which is much more expensive than the other one. He gave us sample of all mezcal he had. This one tasted the best. I believed what he said, so I bought the bottle without a worm. : )
I am from Korea.
I am merried woman and housewife.I have two sons. They are very nice.
Actually I am interested in cooking. I think Korean food is very healthy food.I am really happy to see your place. My English skill is poor. Thank you Maangchi.
Mijung,
Thank you very much! Welcome to my website. Your English is fantastic!
Pity abt the traditional dress : ( It is not the price that determines the value of the item always. I wish I could see the dress….. now i am upset!
” It is not the price that determines the value of the item always.” I feel the same way! that’s very true.
Actually I called the beach hotel from Mexico city. I paid long distance call. : ) I asked a hotel receptionist, if she finds the dress in the room where I stayed, to give the dress to my new friend Ms. Sky who will come back to her house in NY soon But I’m not sure if it works or not. If Sky brings my dress, it will be awesome. The dress costs only $15.00!
All of these things look wonderful! The coconut shell bowls are simply incredible — I’m jealous!
Let us know how that spinach chorizo turns out — it looks very exotic!
Out of curiosity, when you cook with ingredients that you’ve brought back from other countries, do you cook them Korean-style, or do you recreate the flavors that you experienced in the country itself? Or a mix?
ok, Lanie, I will let you know the taste of the green chorizo. I haven’t tasted it yet.
“you’ve brought back from other countries, do you cook them Korean-style, or do you recreate the flavors that you experienced in the country itself? Or a mix?”
I would like to enjoy their authentic cooking. But I found the Oaxan cheese is so good and it can be torn just like threads. One day during my trip, I put the cheese threads on top of kimchi-stir fried rice and it turned out great.
Thanks for the response!!
That is interesting that the Oaxan cheese is great on kimchi fried rice! I would never have thought to put cheese on that, but maybe one day I will experiment a bit :)
Lanie,
Last night I tasted the green chorizo. It tasted a little like pork and lard. The vivid green color must be coming from food coloring.. It was good. The texture was like chewing fried mozzarella cheese and when I cooked it, lots of fat came out. Tasty and a little salty.
I want to give you one bite. Open your mouth, Lanie! lol
I love all yr shopping! YES YES YES! I would find it very very hard to resist them all!!!!!!!
actually I bought their traditional dress but I left it at my hotel room! Cheap stuff but very precious to me. : )
Great Buys! I love Oaxaca ceramics. I love the green color. I just want to let you know that not all of the pottery is food safe. That gorgeous green color is traditionally accomplished by using lead monoxide glaze, which is toxic. Please be careful! You can check out more information about the pottery here if you are interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_glazed_pottery_of_Atzompa
ok, thank you for your advice and the link.
What great stuff – it is all so amazingly colorful. I would love to go to Mexico. Thanks for sharing these photos. I notice you got through a decent amount of the mezcal – well done :) I would too!
lol, decent amount of the mezcal is gone? haha! It’s 10 year aged mezcal which is very precious. So I shared it with almost all of my new friends that I made in Mexico. I know you love to go to Mexico. Thank you for the nice comment!
Is there a worm in the mezcal?
