Are Plug-in Hybrids Really the Eco-Friendly Choice? A New Report Challenges the Status Quo
Are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) the green alternative we've been led to believe they are? A recent report by Transport and Environment reveals a surprising truth: PHEVs may not be as eco-friendly as we thought. The study finds that these vehicles emit nearly five times more planet-heating pollution than official figures suggest, raising questions about their true environmental impact.
PHEVs, which can run on electric batteries and combustion engines, have been marketed as a solution for long-distance travel while reducing emissions. However, the report's findings paint a different picture. By analyzing data from 800,000 cars registered in Europe, researchers discovered that PHEVs emit only 19% less CO2 than petrol and diesel cars, a stark contrast to the 75% reduction suggested by laboratory tests.
The gap between real-world emissions and official estimates is widening. In 2023, PHEVs emitted 4.9 times more CO2 than standardized tests indicated, up from 3.5 times in 2021. This discrepancy is attributed to overestimates of the 'utility factor,' the ratio of electric mode driving to total miles traveled. While official estimates assumed 84% of driving was in electric mode, the researchers found that only 27% of driving was electric.
Even when PHEVs are in electric mode, pollution levels are higher than official estimates. Electric motors struggle to operate alone, with engines burning fossil fuels for almost one-third of the distance traveled in electric mode. This finding challenges the notion that PHEVs are a clean alternative, especially when compared to fully electric cars.
The implications of these findings are significant. Plug-in hybrids have been a topic of political debate, with carmakers pushing for weakened CO2 targets. The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has promised to protect the automobile industry, while other politicians have suggested plug-in hybrids as a possible 'flexibility' in legislation. The researchers calculated that the underestimate of PHEV emissions has cost four major carmaker groups over €5 billion in fines between 2021 and 2023, by artificially lowering their compliance with EU CO2 targets. Drivers of PHEVs also face higher running costs, paying about €500 more annually than suggested by laboratory tests. This highlights the need for more accurate emissions data and transparency in the automotive industry.
