The Ducati Dilemma: Can Bagnaia Solve the Mystery?
In a sport where precision and control are paramount, Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia found himself in a perplexing situation during the Australian Grand Prix sprint. Despite his best efforts, Bagnaia's race was a frustrating affair, leaving him and his team with more questions than answers.
Starting from 11th on the grid, Bagnaia's hopes of a strong showing quickly faded as he dropped to 19th by the fourth lap. A late retirement by Gresini's Fermin Aldeguer allowed Bagnaia to regain a position, but the damage was already done. His lap times, mostly in the low 1m30s, were a far cry from race winner Marco Bezzecchi's pace.
Phillip Island has been a challenging weekend for the entire Ducati stable, with none of its riders qualifying for the front row or securing a podium finish. However, Bagnaia's struggles were particularly pronounced, finishing second-to-last, ahead of only test rider Michele Pirro.
After the sprint, Bagnaia was left scratching his head, as he has been throughout the MotoGP season. His weak point in MotoGP has always been the sprint, and this race was no exception. The Italian admitted to having no explanation for the severe shaking his bike experienced on Saturday.
"It was a very difficult race," Bagnaia said. "We're analyzing the data, trying to understand what's going on. It's clear from the data, but the bike is shaking a lot, and we don't know why."
Bagnaia's team has tried numerous times to rectify the situation, but they've ruled out electronics as the primary cause. "It's something else," he said, "and we're working hard to identify the root cause."
On Friday, Bagnaia encountered an intriguing phenomenon. Riding two identical bikes, he experienced vastly different characteristics. One bike felt more responsive, allowing him to qualify directly for Q2, while the other left him off the pace. Unfortunately, his preferred bike let him down when it mattered most, leaving him feeling like a mere "passenger" in qualifying and the sprint.
"It's strange because I felt better yesterday and this morning," Bagnaia explained. "But in qualifying and the sprint race, I couldn't ride the bike properly. I was just trying to control the shaking, which is unusual."
Bagnaia's long-standing issues this season have raised questions about his future with Ducati, as his contract expires at the end of the 2026 season. When asked about the possibility of another challenging season, Bagnaia acknowledged the difficulty, but pointed to his performance in Motegi as a bright spot.
"Finishing the season like this is tough, but Motegi showed what I'm capable of and helped the team understand our potential. We just need to figure out why Motegi was an exception. Theoretically, everything should be the same, but there's something missing, and we're determined to find it."
Bagnaia will start Sunday's race from 14th place due to a three-place grid penalty for impeding another rider during qualifying.
